On 21 April 2016,We had done an interview at the MERCY Malaysia .Through this blog, we would like to thank for agreeing to be interviewed MERCY and also willing to provide information about volunteerism with us. Here we share all the information that we got from these interview.
From
a raging war in Kosova in 1999, there were thousands innocent civilians were
suffering from the war. Then there was a woman, who is Dr Jemilah Mahmood, a Malaysian obstetriciangynaecologist sought
to offer her services for voluntarily. Then the Malaysian Medical Relief
Society also as known as MERCY Malaysia nowadays was established. The MERCY
Malaysia aimed to provide a platform for Malaysian to unite in international
humanitarian arena. Dr Jemilah was the first leader or the society.
The main objective of MERCY Malaysia
is focusing on provide medical relief,
sustainable health-related development
and risk reduction activities for
vulnerable communities, in both crisis and non-crisis situation. Until
today, MERCY Malaysia has over 1500 members and supported by approximately 8000
registered volunteers.

One of the program carried out by MERCY is the humanity education for students. The main objective for this program is to teach students about the preparation that should be do before an emergency case for example natural disaster, and others. This program is carried out for the secondary and university students. In a week, about 5 schools or universities has been visit by the MERCY members to give talk to students around Malaysia.
Next, the MERCY Malaysia also have been involved in the domestic emergencies. For example, MERCY has sent their volunteers to Kelantan which is flooded in last year. They are sent to help the civilians there. Until now, volunteers from MERCY involved in build new houses to the people which lost their house caused by the flood.
For the international activities, MERCY has sent their volunteers to a few countries which are took damages from the natural disasters. For example, the area in Philippines which has been destroyed by the disaster called as `Taufan Hayan’, and the earthquake which has destroyed some area in Nepal. MERCY Malays only send their volunteers if the country in emergency ask for help. MERCY not send volunteers for country which is not ask for help for example, Japan which is not ask for help for the earthquake there.
Where
MERCY Malaysia gets their fund?
The
society gets their fund based on the donation from another hand. The Malaysian
government doesn’t give funds to MERCY Malaysia. MERCY obtained funds from
their own members and also from the personal donation. They have to buy some
equipment by themselves to help other people. MERCY also did a side income to
increase their money. For example, they are selling bags, pens and a few more
things for the MERCY’s funds.
What
are the future challenges faced by MERCY Malaysia?
The
main challenge for the society is the funds problem. In this situation, we can
see that some helping equipment has increase in their price nowadays. So they
need more funds from the people. They hope that the government will pay their
attention to MERCY and give some funds to them.
